Join the Feed the Future Sri Lanka Trek and you will be able to fund a program designed to give children the nutrition they need to live a life full of promise.
On this 10-day adventure, you will discover Sri Lanka in all its majesty from its timeless ruins to its old-world charm and mesmerising scenery.
Trek through verdant Sri Lankan hills, treated to beautiful landscapes, tea plantations and lush rainforests, while taking on a rewarding project visit to aid the nutrition programme in Batticaloa’s Early Childhood Centre.
In Batticaloa, more than 1 in 4 children younger than 5 are underweight. However, through appropriate training and education, families and teachers are able to provide children access to nutritious, healthy food both at school and at home.
Your trek continues across the country, through forest reserves and majestic waterfalls. Just as the pilgrims did a thousand years ago, you will make the challenging climb to Adam’s Peak, and witness the Sri Lankan sunrise erupt in the sky.
Take a breathtaking train ride to Haputale and visit Horton Plains National Park, famous for its wild grasslands that are scattered with thick forest, interlacing waterfalls and misty lakes.
Feed the Future Sri Lanka Trek will support the implementation of a nutrition programme aimed at addressing high rates of malnutrition amongst children under the age of 5 in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.
This nutrition programme aims at using early childhood development (ECD) centres as the central hub for improving the lives and futures of young children in Batticaloa.
Parents of the children who attend the ECD centres will be given training on nutrition and receive cooking classes as well as access to supplementary feeding programmes aimed at reducing rates of malnutrition. The programme will also provide families with seeds and chickens as well as training to encourage small-scale gardens and farming to improve nutrition at home.
The programme has been implemented in other areas of Sri Lanka with huge success in lowering rates of malnutrition. It will give children the food they need to grow up healthy and strong. Healthy children can look forward to brighter futures free of poverty.
